The proud and untamed knight Galgano Guidotti, in his youth, suddenly abandoned worldly life and, becoming a hermit, devoted himself to penance with the same passion with which he once spent his days on women and wine.
The culminating moment of his repentance occurred on Christmas Day in 1180, when Galgano Guidotti ascended the hill of Montesiepi and plunged his sword into the rock, wishing to turn his weapon into a cross. Indeed, inside the Rotunda today one can still see a large stone from whose crack the hilt and part of the sword emerge, covered in centuries of rust.
There is an evident parallel between this story and the legend of King Arthur, which also attracts the interest of scholars and researchers.
Nearby rises the unfinished structure of an ancient basilica. It was begun in honor of Saint Galgano Guidotti by monks of the Cistercian order. At the time, the order was very wealthy, but during the construction of the church a plague epidemic broke out, and the misfortunes that followed forced the monks to abandon the building.
What remains today looks like a magnificent theatrical set: an unroofed medieval Gothic church open to the sky. It provides a spectacular setting — a true open-air stage for a wedding celebration.
